segmentation and targeting

Market segmentation is where the market is broken up into different sub categories made up of people or businesses with one or more similar characteristics which cause them to demand the same product. 

There are many ways in which the market can be segmented, Gender is a very simple and obvious way of segmenting the market. For example your not going to aim a male shaving razor to a women are you? well depends on which women i guess, haha im joking. anyway back to segmentation, age is also a very good way of splitting up the market. As there are so many different products selling every day in our world the manufacturers need to know who there target market is and this is why market segmentation was born.

Everyone on this planet is falling into a market segment and someone out there whether it be for nappies or zimma frames are being targeted by someone.
 This new Audi advert was aired at the super bowl this year, and if you watch it you know it is directed at males around the age of 30.You know this due to the fact that a very famous actor is being used in the advert. Also it is very fast pased and uses alot of violence and speed, also it was aired at a prime time on television during the super bowl and the main viewers of teh super bowl are males aged between 25-50.

This Loreal advert is clearly aimed at women and also has a very famous respectable actress in it.(Cheryl Cole) we know that it is clearly aimed at women as it is a product for womens hair. The advert has slow relaxing music in it and is very calm and very glamerous.
