perseption and sensation

The senses are used in all adverts on the television to try and entice people to buy products. However they change when they are advertising to the different genders. If an advert is designed for a women the back groud music will be soft and elegant but if its for a man it is more than likely to be rough and strong; also the colours will tend to be different, for example mens body spray has got deep blue colours where as womens has soft pink colours.

The five senses are vital in the way people advertise and here is why
first of all: sight

Why is sight so important?
The visual affects of adverts grab peoples attention, also it shows the customer exactly what they are going to get from the product. Sight enables people to make an initial conclusion as to whether they like the product of not.
Secondly: smell
Smell is also very important in advertising however it is not just used in televion ads but is also used in magazines and papers. Although the consumers can not necesarily smell the actual products through the televison, the visuals allows the brain to think of what the smell is which also grabs the consumers attention of the products.
thirdly: hearing
Hearing is widely used as an advertising tool in television and on radio. On radio it provides the consumers to be able to sense the product that is being advertised, for example if the radio is promoting a new exotic fruit juice then they can use sound effects of the rainforest to enable the listeners to get a feel of where the juice is from.

fourthly: taste
Taste in used widely in adverts to show how appealing food is. A good example of this is the 1995 galaxy advert shown below :

If you watch this advert you will understand how all the senses are used to make this advert so appealing. As she puts the chocolate in her mouth the viewers get a sense of how much she is enjoying it. This is then very good advertising as the viewers will wish to try the chocolate.

last but not least: touch
The way in which people can feel products depicts if they will purchase the item in question. If someone likes the feel of a product then they are going to purchase it, however if someone does not like the feel of a product they will not hesitate to turn it down completely.
