In 2009, there were just under 180,000 charities in England and Wales with a total income of £51.7 billion, with the number of operating charities falling from a high of 190,541 in 2007 to an estimated 172,194 in 2010.” (Mintel October 2010.) This information provided by Mintel shows that due to the recession the charity sector is estimated to see a fall in donations due to people not having enough disposable income to be able to donate to charity.
It has been proven that males give less to charity than females. “1 in 5 of males (19%) does not give to charity at all compared with 16% of women.” (Samaritans, 2005) this shows that a lot of men have never given to charity however more men started giving to charity after the tsunami, “17 % of men gave to charity for the first time since Tsunami and 28% have considered giving since.” (Samaritans 2005)
Many people have different attitudes towards giving to charity. some people give alot to charity where as others dont. some pople find different ways of giving to charity, whether it be directly to the charity i.e. on street corners or at the charitys head offices or whether it be through direct debit so that tehy never actually see where the money is going. Many people give to charity for peace of mind which means that they do not wish to know where the money is going they just know that they are doing the right thing. Other people like to be up close and person with the charity to know exactly where the money is going and how it is going to help people.
Recently for a university topic i became close with a local Rickmansworth charity called 9 Lives which helps disabled people get back to work and also limits the amount of wastage there is on our landfills but refurbashing old furniture. I prefer to know where my moneys going and i know exactly what the money i raised for the charity will be used for.
